Commissioning Initiative

Deadline for submissions: December 1, 2019

Astraeus is proud to announce our First Annual Commissioning Initiative! Our commitment is to collaborate with composers from underserved or underrepresented communities. For our First Annual Commissioning Initiative, we are seeking up-and-coming composers that identify as LGBTQ+ to write a string quartet of 8-20 minutes of length to be performed in a Pride Month concert in June 2020 in the San Francisco Bay Area. We would like to note that instrumentation can be the traditional violin/violin/viola/cello, or violin/viola/viola/cello!

We will be selecting one winner from the application pool, who will receive a workshop with us in March or April 2020 to go over a rough draft of the work, as well as the premiere performance in June 2020. We are committed to paying the winning composer for their work, and our goal is to pay $500 for the composition. The selected composer must be willing to actively participate in fundraising efforts to help raise commission fees. Please note that the $500 is contingent upon the success of our fundraising, and is not guaranteed. Please see our FAQ for more information, or if your question is not answered, email us at

Submissions to include:

  • contact information (name, pronouns, email address, phone number)

  • a short biography

  • resume

  • MIDI files/audio recordings/video recordings and scores for 2 existing works that best exemplify you as a composer (any instrumentation)

All submissions should be emailed to by December 1, 2019 to be considered.
